Non-Communicable Diseases
While infectious diseases have historically dominated Uganda's health landscape, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and chronic respiratory diseases now account for over 33% of deaths yet receive disproportionately little attention and resources. Uganda faces a perfect storm of NCD risk factors including rapid urbanization changing traditional diets, limited awareness of prevention strategies, health systems designed primarily for acute rather than chronic care, prohibitive treatment costs, and limited screening leading to late-stage diagnosis.

ADRIVUYO Uganda's multi-layered strategy addresses prevention through health education campaigns, cooking demonstrations, and physical activity clubs; early detection through mobile screening campaigns that bring basic NCD testing directly to communities; patient support groups providing peer education and pooled resources for medication; and health system strengthening that trains healthcare workers in NCD management and improves supply chains for essential medicines in resource-limited settings.

Our comprehensive three-year NCD initiative in Kisaasi demonstrates the power of our approach, resulting in 60% increase in screening rates, 45% improvement in blood pressure control among hypertensive patients, and 70% reduction in missed appointments. We continue to pioneer innovative approaches including digital management tools, intergenerational prevention programs engaging entire families as "Health Champions," and microenterprise programs specifically targeting households affected by NCDs—helping them generate income to cover health costs while building community resilience against these rising threats.
